Kuba Stępień (they/them) (1997) lives and works between Berlin, Warsaw and their hometown – Bełchatów. Their artistic practice is based on realizing interdisciplinary projects with performative character based on subjective experimental research and embodied auto-theory, using various media, tools and materials often irrational or frivolous. They also work with sound, perform, and run other projects under the pseudonym Apkvp. DJ-ing at queer parties and performing in pieces of other artists is an important part of their artistic practice, which they think of as queer world-making. 

Saliva paintings series

Works presented in the exhibition are part of the Stępień’s saliva paintings series The performative aspect of the works is very important to the artist, as the technique comes out of their body. The artist describes the creation process: using glue and my saliva, I transfer inkjet print onto canvas. Using my fingertips, I rub them against the surface, get rid of the paper, then secure the work and flatten it by covering it with layers of nail varnish of different characteristics. Components of the final work include stock images, their own everyday photographs from the archive, and elements found on the internet.

Realizuje interdyscyplinarne projekty o charakterze performatywnym, oparte na subiektywnych badaniach i ucieleśnionej autoteorii, z wykorzystaniem różnych mediów, narzędzi i materiałów, często irracjonalnych lub frywolnych. Pracuje również z dźwiękiem, występując i angażując się w różne projekty pod pseudonimem Apkvp. Występuje jako DJ na queerowych imprezach oraz w utworach innych artystów, co postrzega w kategoriach queerowania świata.

Obrazy ślinowe

Prezentowane na wystawie prace są częścią cyklu Obrazy ślinowe. Performatywny aspekt wykonywania prac jest bardzo ważny, ponieważ technika wywodzi się bezpośrednio z ciała tworzącej je osoby: „Używając kleju i śliny, przenoszę wydruk atramentowy na płótno. Opuszkami palców pocieram o powierzchnię, usuwam papier, a następnie utrwalam i spłaszczam pracę, nakładając warstwy lakieru do paznokci o różnych właściwościach”. Częścią kompozycji są obrazy stockowe, codzienne zdjęcia z własnego archiwum oraz elementy znalezione w Internecie.
